Maximilian Gutmair

Maximilian Gutmair (he/him) is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in ceramics, drawing, and performance. In his artistic practice, Gutmair creates a narrative cosmos that shifts between abstraction and figuration. An essential element of his often installation-based work is the creation of immersive atmospheres that engage multiple senses and lead visitors into a feeling of timelessness. Guided by intuition and a precise attention to detail, his works explore transformation, queerness, sexuality, nature, emotion, and spirituality.
Gutmair was born in Bamberg and raised in Isny im Allgäu, in southern Germany, where he grew up surrounded by nature and plants in his family’s nursery. Seeking greater freedom and a vibrant queer community, he moved to Munich, which has been his home for over a decade. After completing his training as a floral designer in 2016, Gutmair began studying Fine Arts at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, where he will graduate with a diploma in February 2026. A formative Erasmus year at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome further enriched his sculptural and material practice.
Gutmair is a member of Queerraum, a Munich-based queer artist collective. His works have been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Munich, Marseille, and Panama.
